Many suggested the Atlanta Falcons name but a schoolteacher from Griffin, Georgia was singled out for her reason! Miss Julia Elliott said: "the Falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition." And with that the Falcons indeed began with great courage and fight!
By Christmas Eve 1965 the Falcons established an NFL record by selling 45,000 season tickets by a new club! On August 27, 1966, in Columbia, South Carolina, the Falcons recorded their first victory, defeating the San Francisco 49ers, 24-17, in a preseason game.
